Privacy Impact Assessments

Assess how projects and systems collect, use and protect personal information, and identify privacy risks and safeguards.

A privacy impact assessment, or PIA, is a structured look at how a project, system or vendor collects, uses, shares and protects personal information, and what could go wrong for the people it describes. It identifies the privacy risks early, while the design can still change, and records the safeguards you chose.

It matters because personal information carries legal obligations, and because trust is easier to keep than to rebuild. A PIA answers the questions a privacy officer, a regulator or a customer will ask: what do you collect, why, who sees it, how long do you keep it and how is it protected. Doing it before launch is far cheaper than doing it after a complaint.

Start with a short screening step so only projects that touch personal information get the full assessment. For those that do, map the data flow, name the purpose for each element, list the risks and decide the safeguards with the project team. Joe can help you frame the questions; your privacy officer and legal advisers decide what your obligations require.
