Threat and Risk Assessments
Carry out threat and risk assessments that identify assets, threats, vulnerabilities and recommended safeguards.
A threat and risk assessment, or TRA, identifies the assets that matter to your organization, the threats that could affect them, the weaknesses those threats could use and the safeguards that reduce the risk to a level leadership accepts. It is the reasoning behind your security priorities, written down.
It matters because security budgets are finite and every control competes with another. Without an assessment, priorities follow the loudest voice or the latest headline. With one, you can show why a control was chosen, what risk it addresses and what remains, and you can revisit the decision when the business or the threat picture changes. Frameworks, regulators and customers expect this reasoning to exist.
Start with a short inventory of the systems and information that would hurt most to lose, expose or corrupt. For each, list the realistic threats and the weaknesses you know about, rate likelihood and impact with a simple scale, and record the treatment you choose. Joe can help you structure the register and phrase the ratings; the judgements are your organization’s to make.
